Re: Nandina domestica

Marge, do your nandinas berry? In spring, let us know how it survived the
winter (may we ALL survive the winter!!).

In California, these plants are common, and they look like little bamboos
with red berries. Beautiful! I personally like the plain green cultivars,
which may be hardier than the red-leaved ones (this is just a guess on my
part), because the contrast between the red berries and light green leaves
is so striking. Of course, if there are no berries then red leaves would
be nice.

My friend Diane Heilenman in Louisville (she's the Courier-Journal garden
columnist) has been managing to keep Nandina alive, but I can't remember
if it berries for her. I think that's zone 6. I once tried one of the
plain ones here, but it didn't overwinter. May be worth trying again. I
have also read that you need multiple plants to get optimum berries. Just
one plant won't do much.
