Re: PawPaw

Asimina triloba (L.) Dunal is a temperate tree fruit in the mostly
tropical custard apple family, Annonaceae. It's the tree commonly
called paw paw here, although there are several other species of
Asimina, also native to parts of the US and also, where they occur,
having paw paw in their common names.

According to what I can find out, "flowers are strongly protogynous,
self-incompatible and require cross pollination although some trees
may be self-compatible".

The PawPaw FAQ
http://www.pawpaw.kysu.edu/FAQ.htm#q11

says:

"Pawpaws are generally self-incompatible, so you need two trees for
cross-pollination. Plant at least two different cultivars or
seedlings. Two grafted trees of the same cultivar will not
cross-pollinate. (One cultivar, Sunflower, has been reported to be
self-compatible, but this has not been verified scientifically.)"

The FAQ also says:

"Pawpaw is also a common name for papaya (Carica papaya), a tropical
fruit in the family Caricaceae"

Now, I wonder which one you have, since this page about Carica
indicates that in Australia, it's commonly called Paw Paw?

Common names will get us every time:-)

I have been reading quietly what you are writing about PawPaw. I am
in SE Queensland,Australia (new to the area) and we have PawPaw which
have germinated from seed in our worms beds. So far those that have
flowered are all male and I'm still hoping for a female among them.
However, I have not heard you peolpe mention the need for to trees -
male and female to produce fruit. Are our paw paw different from
those in your part of the world?

Regards and God's Blessings
