In a message dated 97-12-26 10:03:29 EST, you write:
<< I was reading about plants listed in Taylor's Pocket Guide to "Perennials
for Shade" by Ann Reilly. In it is described the Common Valerian, with
which I'm unfamiliar.
I like the looks of this plant, and it is described as "...valued as a
garden plant for its clusters of fragrant white, pink, red, lavender, or
blue to purple flowers, which bloom in summer." And, "...grows 3-4 feet
tall and has lance-shaped or fernlike leaves."
I'd like to hear about your experiences with this plant. Is it invasive?
What are its habits? It is listed at Zone 5; does it tolerate summer temps
at 100*F and above?
Any discussion on this plant will be appreciated. >>
Sherryl,
Common valerian grows wild in patches in our area. It often buds up pink but
always opens white. I have never seen the other colors mentioned. Perhaps
they are selected cultivars.
Valerian is sold in the herb sections or it must be easily grown from seed as
it seeds all around my garden.
What I know about this plant is that it is drought tolerant, had a strong
scent that some like (other do not) and cats often take a shine to this plant.
A fusion made from dried roots is thought to be a tranquilizer. The dried
roots have a foul odor.
In the garden the foliage is attractive and the flower stalks attract
butterflies. The flower stalks can be up to three feet and are lacey white
round clusters, welcome here.
Sherryl, is this primrose list for shady plants? I am so confused by my mail
these days! Valerian can bloom in half shade, I notice Taylor calls it a full
sun plant. I should add that it is hardy for me in zone 4.
