If I remember right, oaks are sensitive to compaction of soil on their roots
also, say from heavy construction equipment. I think both the extra dirt
(anything over about an inch deep) and compaction reduces the amount of oxygen
to the roots. Since I garden under oaks, red, white, and burr , I think, I'm
always concerned about hurting them when I add lots of mulch and soil
amendments. Now that I think about it, my aim is to make the soil loose so it
probably will help oxygen get through, not hurt.
Has anyone else heard about the oxygen factor?
