one thing we usde to do back in the "old days" was to get liquid iron, a fair
common plant "nutrient". basicly, this could be called "liquid rust". we
would experiment with dilutions, but the results in a sprayer, and "paint"
our concrete blocks. dont let this stuff run on to any area you dont want
"rusted". actually wasnt a bad look, specially when it aged some, and lasted
forever. a similar effect might be had thru scattering of iron filings on
the steps, letting them sit until a nice color is reached.
