Re: First Snow
Here in the Sierra Nevada, we had about 4 inches of snow on December 8;
it was beautiful, especially to us Californians from the coast who are
not used to snow. But since then, it has gotten quite warm, with no
rain. The garden has stayed unusually green with things like roses
still trying to bloom. I understand there is worry that we will have
too dry a year.
I had some Malva seedlings which were getting too large - yes I know it
is an odd time of year, but I sometimes get these unseasonable urges! I
planted them outside in an empty raised bed, and they are growing
happily so far. If we get a cold snap, they will be in trouble, unless
I cover them somehow. That illustrated the problem I often have with
starting seeds: I get them up, but dont know how to handle the medium
size plants, to get them so they can survive outside. Suppose that is
what a cold frame is for, but I have yet to learn how to use one.
Wishing you all the best for the holiday season, and the year 2000!
