Hi Kate,
    I have found that if you place the Japanese Painted fern among rocks of any
size it is happier. The rocks keep the roots cooler, maintain a spot of moisture.
They will also send out roots far enough to travel coming up among the rocks and
seed themselves a bout when there is a leaf mulch or something similar with the
rocks.
