I too have oaks (and pines and hickories). I have had the limbs
trimmed up about twenty feet which lightens up the shade.
On your other comment about Japanese Painted fern. True it doesn't
like to be dry, but once established can tolerate drought and will
revive when the rains do come.
My Aruncus while not in my densest shade like Cimicifuga is in
about 80% shade and doing well if I protect it from those four
legged vermin.
