Deborah,
Found out last night at a garden show that Omaha is technically zone 5b - so
my estimate of being zone 4 is pretty close.
Yes, the J.P. fern will survive. Spent its first winter on the north side of
my house, came up fine the next year. It is now on the south side, but in a
shaded area (under my deck - that is where my shade garden resides).
We usually have a good amount of snow here also. This winter has been DRY.
Have had 5-6" at Christmas time and that's it. Temps way too high for our
area, too. Many days in 50's even 60's. No precip of any kind. Am really
concerned about every plant I have. At best, the oldest of anything has been
through two growing seasons (am in new subdivision).
So, I figure my best recourse is to get moisture into some key areas (esp.
new trees) and hope that the roots have survived. The poor things must be
terribly confused. Have been told that the drought we are experiencing is
worse than the one that brought on the "Dust Bowl". They just don't say this
very loudly, don't want people to panic. But I have never seen NE this dry.
Have lived here all of my life.
'Nuf said. Happy Gardening!
