The zone 4 you saw in a book may be Sunset zone 4 which is the zone
that is just east of Seattle. It is colder and wetter than the
coastal zone 5 . I guess it would be equivalent to USDA zone 7.
Some of the tender rhododendrons (like the maddeniis) will freeze
there, as will some of the rarer shrubs from Chile and New Zealand.
It is a paradise for woodland and rock plants. (paraphrased from the
