Re: Primulas from the big box

I look for these each year and also enjoy having something fresh and green
and blooming to get me through this cabin-fever month. I try to find them
moist and sheltered spots when I plant them out later in the spring, and
have a fairly good success rate. A very cold winter without snow cover will
do them in, but they return more often than not, and bloom very early.

My other pleasure is a "florist" cyclamen that I bought for $3.99 that has
been covered with blossoms for almost a month now. It will ultimately be
disposable, but is a much better bargain than cut flowers.

On the bright side, I have snowdrops blooming out under the maple tree, and
have all my seed orders in!

Hello,
I was at Wal-Marts doing grocery shopping yesterday when I happened by a
shopping cart full of Primula. Unlabeled, ragged, only pieces parts
remaining above the medium. Just above the soil line in each pot was a small
cluster of buds and leaf tips.... you guessed it. I could not resist. Only
.50 and they did so look as though they were orphans needing a good home.
Watered them, set them up in the windowsill and today they have foliage
up to about 1 1/2 to 2 inches, bloom stems pushing up with numerous buds on
each.
Probably polyanthus hybrids and may or may not survive outside, but who
cares..... I am watch something green and in bloom while we get through
winter's return.
