Hello Virginia
You are probably right on the species... P. auricula mix color of
bloom.... the Pacific hybrid strain also show up quite strongly. Both these
strains are gown primarily for life in a pot. Having said that, they can
quite often be coaxed into living a normal life in the shade garden.
I have quite a few species of Primula in my garden. They come into bloom
shortly and with the various mixed species and hybrids I will have a primula
in bloom through June. I tend to stay with the easily grown ones... P. veris
and its forms (English Cowslip), P. vulgaris (English Primrose) and many of
the color forms, P. juliana hybrids like 'Early Girl' and 'Jay-Jay' a
scarlet red bloomer. Probably my favorite is the P. sieboldii, or Japanese
woodland primula....
I hope to add at least six more to the garden this coming spring.....
