Currently the corn plant gets lots of TLC (watered, fertilized and
good light)so I'm wondering why it's blooming now. The flowers are
intensely fragrant. There is also a new shoot. Can anyone help with
this puzzler?

That's why it's blooming. I've only seen this once - and not on any
of my plants. Actually, the light has a lot to do with it - mine
don't get enough to bloom. Means you are doing right by that plant -
so keep up the good work:-)
