Hello from Big River,Sask. Zone 2
I live in the boreal forest transition zone. Our house is in a pine
meadow with 8' of sand. I brought in soil that was taken from a river
bed which is a loam and I now have a bunch of horse manure to
incorporate into the garden. I have large pines around the house and I
have flower beds around all sides of the house. I transplanted lily of
the valley and another shadeloving plant I thought was a hosta but I
later found out it was something else and I've forgotten the name .I saw
it mentioned on the home and garden network network and they said it was
a plant that theyoften are trying to get rid of in their gardens in
England! It is suppose to be invasive but with all this sand I don't
think it'll go far. These two plants have estabished themselves well in
the flower bed on the north side of the house. I bought an Aastillbe
and a lungwort at a sale last fall and put them in the northwest corner
I later foundout they need richer moist soil so I'll be adding some more
manure to there beds and will make sure they are well watered. We just
put a widemouth well in a lower peatbog area and I want to get some
lanscaping done around it. It is surrounded by dence blackspruce on the
south and our driveway on the north that lets some light in. If I have
any luck with the asillbe surviving the winters here I'd like to plant
more of them. What plants do well in acidy soil in the shade?
I found it interesting to find out that daylilies do wellin the shade
I wasgiven a daylily and I was looking for full sun for it but I'd like
to get more for the west side of the house. Where can you get the shady
Lady. Perferably a Canadian site. I have columbine and vaginia creepers
growing there now, plus I put in some lupines so I'll see how they do.
I put some begonia bulbs in but I didn't get them in too late and I
didn't get anyblooms but I'm going to try again next year.I want to grow
some from seed any tips?
I have lemon balm and chives growing in the shadyest part of the bed
on the east side then the purple bearded Iris and some asian lilies and
honeysuckle bushes I also planted some scarlet runners on the trellis
ther til the dropmore honeysuckle vines take hold. They did well
I had put a bunch of bachalor buttons in the open spaces that I had
weeded out of my sons garden and they did well I'd like to plant more
herb on this side of the house for it is close to the kitchen door. What
Herbs do well in shade? The lemonbalm and chives do well and I heard
parsley does well so I'll be planting that. We have lots of shade loving
understory plants growing in the forests around us The most prolific
being the false solomon seal and we have lots of mushrooms after a rain
The blackspruce forest on the east edge of our yard has lots of
moss .Very enchanting! Thats all for now! I'm still developing my beds
and like to hear about more shade loving hardy perenials!
