 Elaine,
My favorite is Lysimachia nummularia 'Aurea', "Golden Moneywort". A creeping
vine-like groundcover, with beautiful roundish, yellow-gold leaves. I grow it
in sun and shade. If you planting it in a bed, start it in the middle of the
bed. I also grow it in our patio beds and it creeps out and grows on
flagstone, creating a very nice effect.
It prefers a moist soil but it does very well in drier conditions.

Another I'd recommend is Asarum canadense, "Canadian Wild Ginger." The
European Wild Ginger, Asarum europaeum, has glossy leaves. It is to my eye
more attractive than the former, but it does not spread as much as I should
like it to.

On another matter, I found a photo of Acanthus mollis--a gret shade plant with
spires if beautiful white and lavender bracts. If anyone would like me to send
you the jpeg. file, please let me know. I will scan it at 150 DPI, 50 %, so it
should be around 250 KB.
