Re: [SHADEGARDENS] great groundcovers, deer nibblers

Elaine,
There are two little known groundcovers that I am crazy about. One is the
euonymus fortunei 'Kewensis' and another Lysimachia japonica minutissima. The
eunonymus has tiny 1/4" glossy leaves and will climb with support. Ron
Simmering in the Quad Cities area (Davenport, IA) has a beautiful planting of
this that is climbing over a large rock. It is gorgeous. The Lysimachia is
like a teeny L. nummularia 'aurea'. Its leaves are about an eighth of an inch
and has tiny yellow flowers. The euonymus is listed in Forest Farm, 990
Tetherow Rd., Williams, OR 97544. I think I got the lysimachia from Robyn's
Nest, but I don't see it listed in her catalogue this year. Arrowhead Alpines
does list it. They are at P.). Box 857, Fowlerville, MI 48836.

Marilyn was mentioning mazus reptans. This is also another nice ground-
hugging groundcover. It is faster spreading than the two above, and I guess
in some places might be considered invasive, but I always liked it. The
problem I had was that I got creeping charlie mixed in with it, and couldn't
get charlie out without killing the mazus. I HATE c. charlie.

A question for the group. If deer eat your hemlocks will the branches that
have been nibbled resprout?
