        I see where Paul answered this one for you. I second his judgement. They
are not easily killed off. I would suggest one more thing though... how
about a bit of compost (not much) over where you settled the roots back
down into the soil and then a light mulch? Thee will still be some heaving
going on for another month or so. The mulch will help ease the heaving and
the compost will give them a bit of extra food to start their growth with
this spring. My bet is they will be up early this spring.
        My thoughts on the heaving are simple. Probably did not have enough time
to get feeder roots down into the soil while in active growth last year. If
they are where you want them now I would leave them alone and let them get
started good to recover. Once the roots get mature enough to get under and
around that rock they will be happy campers.
