The reason for the rock is pretty simple. The area where I planted them
is on the south side of the front porch, west side of the house in an
"L" shaped area under the cover of a very big oak (this is the same
place where I put the trillium). It gets only dappled shade in the
afternoon. I was trying to make a "natural habitat" for KY natives.
Very clay soil with what ever was in the ground from construction years
ago. I had several natives already there on their own (they just kinda
showed up over the years).
A native bush (still unidentified) was becoming a huge weed and so I
removed it. Other than mulch, this area's soil has never been improved.
I thought the brunnera would be beautiful in this setting (which they
were) but seemed to be having trouble and not growing as well as I
thought they should.
The site is wet even during summer droughts, so I felt they deserved
better drainage. That's why I put the rocks under them. I thought they
had responded well. I had fertilized them with worm castings. I guess I
will need to do this again. I won't give up on them too easily, I just
wanted to know if they had a chance.
Thanks for the information
