I'm writing to second the motion concerning Amelanchiers. Last summer I persuaded a neighbor to plant one as a replacement for a crabapple that was severely damaged by a storm. She was set on another crab, but after discussing the problems crabs get in the shade with various fungi, she agreed to try the serviceberry. I'm anxious to hear her reaction when it flowers this spring.
Incidentally, I also talked her into her first Viburnum. She's trusted my judgement ever since.
Later!
Mark
