Hi Sheila -
I have black walnut trees and the hostas, and other shade-tolerant
perennials, grow under them just fine. The juglone produced by the black
walnut trees is growth-inhibiting to tomatoes and some other related
vegetables, but not the the shade plants that I place under them. The
biggest problem that I have is that I have pretty dense shade overall, from
all types of trees, and even hostas need some sun to grow well.
Also, if you are intrested in hostas, you might want to consider joining
your local hosta society, if you have not already done so. And, perhaps,
even the national group, the American Hosta Society. If you want more
information about these groups, just email me back and I will see what I
can do.
