This is also the policy at some K-marts, I'm guessing.  Haven't actually
inquired there, but my dad lives just behind them and goes "shopping at
the boutique" a euphemism that means dumpster diving.  He's saved many a
plant and stuck them in his own back yard, or given them to me. Of course
there is no selection, and the quality varies greatly, but hey, what a
bargain! You'd be surprised at what they throw out. And I can't figure
out why, since there's absolutely nothing wrong with it (not just garden
stuff), others, just a hole in the bag (peat moss, kitty litter,
fertilizer, detergent), some its past the holiday (just take the little
bow off the ivy wreath).
