Re: Cimicifuga 'Hillside Black Beauty' vs...

Hello Cindy,
Atropurpurea is usually seedling grown by nurseries and you will find
variation in the amount of dark color found plant to plant.... just a matter of
how much based upon the nursery and their culling. This cutlivar does tend to
loose its color as it approaches bloom period. Some will remain in the stems and
leaf veins so it does not look the same as the species.
Normally seed germination takes two years. If you sell bloom sized plants you
have to grow it on for three years from germination minimum. That is about 5 years
to play with a plant... however much dark foliage is there, or not, before sale.
Brunette comes next on the "darkest list". Nice plant and since it has been
out there the longest it is now getting cheaper. Also it is in tissue culture.
Even with TC, however, one pays a pretty price and must order a minimum, then grow
on for a full year before sale if you expect to sell a decent sized plant.
Hillside Black Beauty is stunning, without a doubt. It is also now in tissue
culture. I am on the waiting list for this one.
Black Negligee is like a black beauty but with more finely cut and lacy
looking foliage. Also on the waiting list for this one from TC.
