Claire--
And of course YOU are right. I spend a lot of time searching, and also
telling myself "No you cannot have it!" Like with the current discussion
of Cimicifuga--I'd love to buy and try all of them, but given my past luck
with these particular so-called perennials (hah) it would be $300 down the
drain. But I don't mean to discourage others.
While searching, I came upon the website for Rommy Lopat's fun newsletter
THE WEEDPATCH GAZETTE. It is based in northern IL, and has lots of info
not only for the upper Midwest, but for anyone who does not garden in the
tropics. At the website, one thing I like is the "Catalog of Favorite
Plants" which is really long lists of shrubs, trees, water plants,
grasses, etc. By Latin name and then cultivar, and then where they can be
had. Looking through, say, the Ilex listings, you get a pretty good idea
of the two or three nurseries that carry the unusual ones. And can make a
decision to drive up in spring and check some of them out. Of course she
only mentions nurseries that advertise with her, but they are a fairly
classy group.
The URL is www.weedpatch.com
Does anyone subscribe to the newsletter? I'm seriously considering it.
