Good morning, Madelin:

Plants/bulbs need there roots to acclimate to there new "home," if you will.
It is my understanding that by putting a planting mix into a hole without
digging it in with potentially cause the roots not to penetrate the
surrounding clay soil.  Hence, the plants/bulbs roots will only grow so far
and then begin to encircle their planting site.
