Hi Rich,
That is my understanding as well and it seem to be common sense. However, if
the hole dug for the new plant immediately encounters drought there will be a
poor result. I think to add one step further and loosen soil 30 cm. or so
around the planting hole would be helpful. In original soil it is sometimes
nearly impossible to keep it watered in dry summers. The very best method is
to have a gardener who knows everything and digs a hole four feet wide plus
attends to to watering each morning before you tour the garden!!! This same
gardener is named Jack, trained in the UK and works for a pittance as he
loves the garden so.
