Good Morning Gene,
Physocarpus, any cultivar, will survive any conditions. I have two both
planted in dry soil in full sun. Last summer one of them was completely
enveloped by a variegated hops vine. When I realized the shrub was missing,
I cut back the vine - no harm.
As all shrubs, I think a very good start is the best way to insure success.
Bless Physocarpus, with it's beautiful black-purple leaves, a hardy shrub for
zone 4.
