Re: AMERICAN GARDENER

Hello Marge,
Verrrry interesting, indeed. In the past from other editors I have
received a copy of the article as it is to appear. I got to make comments
about their editing... (not The American Gardener) Which, I will admit, were
both ignored in some cases and in others they nudged things a bit. When
doing text for newspaper, they generally called as they were editing and we
made changes together.... but that was due to the editor knowing nothing
about gardening ... just wordsmith.
You are correct about the surprise part... everything I have ever
written that was edited and printed has ended up being a of a surprise to me
in one way or another. Words added that I did not say is my biggest and
hardest one to take. I do try and recognize that I sold the material to them
and it does become their property.... so I try not to get too personally
attached to what I write.
The one I will never understand is editors contact you for what you have
to say, who you are, your style of writing. Once they receive the first
draft of text, they do their best to remove all traces of the author.
Bobbi, not picking on you personally... you are a gardener as well as
editor of garden writing.... can you make any comments of our complaints as
writers?
