I have just started shade gardening this past
summer and really don't have alot planted yet. I live in Zone 5/6. I have a
wooded area behind me and decided that it looked terrible and figured that there
was alot I could do to make it look nice. So last year with the help of my
boyfriend we started clearly the weeds and cleaned up a good amount some 20 feet
deep. I then marked off some paths. I started by first adding hostas. My
favorite. Then found some natural ferns growing and felt so lucky because I
wouldn't have to plant in some because they were already there. I added some
daylilies. That was about the end of our project for the year. Next year we hope
to add more color. Looking for deep shade loving flowering plants and will
probably plant a few annuals. Would perfer perennials that stay kind of small
and nothing invasive. For a wooded area it is really awfully dry there and since
I am an inexperienced gardener it is quite and challenge to me. But having fun
with it none the less.
