Is this possible with a shade garden and what plants would
>you recommend?***Hi Marcell....it's definitely possible. Some plants that
you might want to include are: Lobelia cardinalis (likes more moisture),
Thalictrums, Aquilegia, Echinacea (these won't take full shade, but will
take more than half a day), Verbascum chaixii album (this also won't take
dense or all day shade), Filipendulas (these come in about as many styles as
the thalictrum). You might also try the Eupatorium 'Chocolate' in partial
shade.....I'm guessing you might lose some of the chocolate color of the
leaves, but would still get some flowers, and the butterflies love it.
My favorite Filipendulas are hexapetala 'Flore Pleno' (very short...about 15
inches...clusters of white flowers...slowly spreading habit) and palmata
'Elegans' (about 2 1/2 feet tall with pink, flat plumes).

be your biggest nightmare....the maples are very shallow-rooted and are
moisture-hogs....not only is it difficult to dig planting holes under an
established maple, the maple also sucks the moisture out from the plants.
Oaks and pines are much easier for a gardener to live with, I think.
..along with sources for seeds for>woody plants....for a person who is on a
tight budget.****Do you have a LOT of time? Woodies take a long time to
germinate and grow into trees, and most take stratification for the seeds to
even germinate...this means alternating warmth and cold for several months
each just to get them to germinate. Having said that, you might be able to
get either seeds or rooted cuttings from Arrowhead Alpines. They sell
cuttings of lots of woodies. Musser Forests also sells smaller woodies, and
so does ForestFarm. I don't have the FF catalogue handy, so maybe someone
else can provide that one.
