Hi, Clyde. I have hardy ivy growing in a narrow area between my neighbor's
house and mine. It took forever to establish itself - at least 5 years -
now it is doing a kudzu on my property. It has pretty much killed off an
old and formerly beautiful double-trunked tree, continues to invade my bog,
and has even broken out a basement window. Worst of all, it provides the
perfect environment for both slugs and loxoceles spiders. I don't know why
for the spiders, but for slugs, I am sure the constant, dense shade under
the leaves, moisture retention capability of those leaves matted over the
ground, and the fact that no one treads there (so they don't even have to
risk being squashed),
all ensure health and vitality. They do not worry the ivy, but sneak out
to attack nearby hostas. I am wondering if lamium provides the same
slug-friendly atmosphere - I do not know how densely it grows.
