Hello Claire,
I see where Paul has already touched on the problem and I agree with him.
The zone rating for the Vesper Iris is generally zone 5. You have surviving
plants, but can't keep mature ones long enough to bloom. Try a protected
corner near a wall that gets afternoon sun. While these will take a bit of
shade, they will not tolerate a lot of it and still bloom. Besides you need
the afternoon light to get them to perform the afternoon opening and
closing. Thus the Vesper name.
I ordered my original plants and then propagated them for the nursery from
seeds off of the parent plants.
