Sheila,
I second Bob's comment about maidenhair ferns. They grow wild in the woods
here, not near any stream, but in deep leaf mold. When I find them, however,
they are only one or two divisions, they don't grow into big clumps like Bob's
native ones do. If I bring one out of the woods, however, and plant it in my
garden, it gets really big. The thing is, I don't know why. The only thing I
know is that if they get too dry they will die out and not come back. I plant
them in areas that have good soil or get irrigation. They are one of my
favorites. I would love to find the Himalayan maidenhair and try it. Anyone
growing it? Does anyone have a source?

 Hi Sheila
I haven't much of a clue how to keep maidenhair ferns alive. Where I
live in northeast Iowa they grow in huge patches in the ditches on the
north side of cuts in the limestone where they made the roads which
would actually make it on the south side of the road. It is very moist
 also.
