Re: Gunnera (Was Five questions)

We grow Gunnera in big(!) pots and bring it indoors for the winter. Our
greenhouse is about 5 degrees Celsius in the winter. We keep the Gunnera
"evenly moist but not constantly wet" I think is the expression.

Last year was the second winter for this. THe Gunnera split into three
plants during the previous summer, and in the spring (of 2000) two of the
splits bloomed. (It was still in one pot). The plant was divided in April
(leaves and flowers just starting) and we put the resulting plants
outside because there was no room left in the greenhouse! They suffer
snow and a certain amount of frost (-5 C.) with no visible problems, and
the two we have left have begun to split into three plants again.

I live in Zone 6 in Nova Scotia, on the Atlantic coast. Sometimes we get
-15C. in the winter. About 200 km. south of here on the Bay of Fundy, at
Annapolis Royal, an historic site with very interesting gardens, they
overwintered a Gunnera outside last year. They cut off the leaves and
used them to wrap the crown of the Gunnera, according to the brief
description I had- I don't know if they put down any extra straw or other
things.

WE are intending (Since 6 Gunnera would seem to be a surfeit) to try and
overwinter one outside this year.
