Nematodes (the Beneficial Sf Nematodes) are not listed as effective for
foliar nematodes, but maybe they've never been tested on foliar. Are the two
types (Aphelenchoides fragariae and Meloidogyne incognita) related, and would
that be a good thing? I'm picturing in my mind this sci-fi battle of the
nematodes, competing for territory. Then there is another Grub-Away nematode that
attacks, supposedly, almost every type of soil dwelling garden pest. I have
never tried a using beneficial nematodes, but I am a little concerned. Here in
the Midwest for the last 3-5 years we are deluged with so called "ladybugs"
in our homes all fall and winter into early spring. I have to vaccuum them
daily from the walls, curtains, etc. They are the result of the farmers using a
more "green" way of treating their harvest, which is great, but I worry that
there might be a downside to using the beneficial nematodes. I wonder if they
overwinter. It says the control lasts for 3 months, so it doesn't sound like
it. There is a long article in the Hosta Journal that just came yesterday. It
mostly goes with diagnosis, treatment and cleanup, not really looking into
what might feed on foliar nematodes. I am going to send an email to Warren
Pollock, who wrote the article, and see if there has been any research into this.
