[SG] Hosta Maturity?

Hi Neil:

I am far from being an expert, but if you do not have a variegated
leaf, typical of the variety, you do NOT have a good specimen. If you
have a plain green leaf of 'Janet' it has reverted and, in my opinion,
it will not get the desired variegation with maturity. I've had
divisions Gold Standard revert to all green. I divided those out and
it makes a lovely all green plant but it is no longer 'Gold Standard'.
The remaining variegated divisions continue on and is typical of
that variety. As you know, Gold Standard is very close to the same as
'Janet' only larger and a more vigorous grower than Janet.

I would hesitate to "down" buying from Lowe's or K-Mart or other
such places, but wherever you buy, you should have a good idea of
what the cultivar your are buying should look like and if it is not,
don't buy it. Maturity does bring major changes in leaf size and
texture but the variegation should be apparent right away. Our K-Mart
is selling plants that have Klehms labels on them so you see those
should be true to type. Just recently I bought some nice large plants
of Great Expectations at a Wal-Mart in Muscatine. They are excellent
plants and have leaves typical of that name.

Do I know you? We live in Davenport.
