Hi Debby:

Since it's so hot in so many places around the USA, I'd wait until early
autumn to transplant the ferns. Get as much of the roots out as possible.
You'll be able to split them into more ferns.

Give them a good soaking before planting. Don't allow them to dry out.

I assume you know that they do best in shade or part shade; morning sun is
OK.

If your ferns are tall, don't worry if you break some fronds. They'll come
back.
