Bobbi, the genus likes moist, rich acidic soil. Some are not
native....acerina is one that isn't. Since you should be ahead of me as far
as growth, yours is very small for this time of year....my Atropurpurea is
about 22 or 23 inches tall right now, and racemosa is 2.5 feet tall,
simplex, however, is quite small  yet....it is the latest bloomer of all of
them. Acerina is also small. The nursery I work for has 8 varieties of
Cimicifuga....the most expensive is around $25 (Hillside Black Beauty). Jean
