Hi all,
After watching all of the discussion about C. ramosa/C. racemosa,
I decided to do a little diggin through my references and found
C. ramosa in two of them: _Hardy Herbaceous Perennials_ Jelitto
and Schacht and the Royal Horticultural Society's _Index of
Garden Plants_ ed. Griffiths. Both recognize C. ramosa as a
valid species with very similar descriptions. HHP says that
C. ramosa grows to over 2m, C. racemosa 1.5-2m while IGP gives
heights of 2m+ for C. ramosa and 2.5m+ for C. racemosa. Both
agree that C. racemosa has the larger raceme: 90 vs 40 cm for
IGP and 60 vs 40 cm for HHP. The overall description of the
habit of the plant is very similar. C. racemosa is native
to eastern North America and C. ramosa to the Kamchatka region
of Asia. HHP says C. racemosa is hardy to zone 3, C. ramosa to
zone 4; IGP gives zone 4 for C. racemosa and zone 9 (no that's
not a typo - it's what the book says). Given that C. racemosa
is only slightly more hardy than C. ramosa (discounting the z9
rating as an error), I tend to think that they should be roughly
at the same stage of their annual growth and at a similar size.
Hope this is some use; if not, it was fun digging through the
books and reading about Cimicifuga and trying to figure out where
I'm going to find the species that I don't have that would be
hardy here (7 according to IGP) to add to the five that I already
have.
Good luck and good growing,
John
