In going through our inventory of ferns rescued last summer from a
friend's soon-to-be abondoned garden, we discovered once specimen that
we haven't been able to identify. At first glance, it looks more or
less like the familiar western sword fern polystichum munitum. Upon
closer observation, it is different in several ways. The leaf is
1-pinnate, but the pinna are much wider, more blunt to rounded, more
like a nephrolepsis, but smooth ("entire"). But the big difference is
in the large sori, which are rust-brown and completely cover (in two or
more loose rows) the underside of the terminal dozen or so pinnae on the
fertile fronds. It's hard to provide any additional morphology, as the
specimen we have has only a few fronds, the largest being about 18" long
and perhaps 3" wide. We do know that the fern is hardy, as it went
(potted and unprotected) through our winter just north of Seattle with
one 15F night and a few 20-25F nights.
Any fern experts out there? Or links to fern experts?
