Hello Deborah,
        Ferns have quite an extensive root system and that is how they survive a
lot in nature growing between rocks and competing with tree roots. Unless
you know what to look for.. and even then... you will miss seeing the wiry
brown-black roots. About the same color as the soil and forest floor duff.
Try and take as large a root ball as you can when transplanting a fern.
Then water in and mulch. Mulch is one of the secrets to keeping ferns. They
want cool root runs.
        Keep moist but not soggy and mulch. They will come out of the transplant.
