I like to divide mine every third year. I do this in the ground and shovel
right into the plant's center. I leave half it behind and replant the other
half elsewhere. They are woody but a good sharp shovel will easily divide
them. I like to do it in the fall to give it time to establish its roots
over winter. We do have mild winters so they get a good start. They are way
ahead of those that are divided in spring, so I choose fall dividing. I
replant any pieces that have broken away at that time if they have pieces
of root on them. They take longer to bloom again but they catch up fairly
fast.
