Christine:
I wish I could answer this for you - our climates are soooo very different.
If you do not get an answer off of the post, maybe you could contact one of
the mail order companies who sell these. I do remember seeing these
available in one of the spring catalogs. If you don't get an answer let me
know and I can do some digging.....I remember that it was in a couple of the
"fancier" catalogs.
The leaves on my 'black magic' are barely 8" long - I received these from a
friend and they were tiny little bublets. I am still flabbergasted at how
much these grew once I put them into a pot with no drainage.
Common Elephant Ears live fine in the ground where I am but this is the first
season for me with the 'Black Magic'. I know that Alocasia's (in the same
family) do fine as a house plant-----but they will rot if overwatered during
the non-growing seasons...as I guess anything would.
Good luck and let me know if you want me to flip through the catalogs.
Happy Gardening to you.
