Hi Narda! (We've talked "hosta" in the past.) We live on the edge of a
very large park - for years we had NO problems with raccoons until some
group of idiots decided that more money was to be had if the golf course was
expanded. Acres of wooded area were sacrificed for it and we've been seeing
a plethora of raccoons and deer since. For the most part, the raccoons have
not been too much of a problem. I do have/use a Havahart trap when they
just can't manage to leave my water garden alone. I release them WAY out
where I hope they won't be a nuisance to someone else (and making sure its
late enough into the season to not leave babies somewhere to starve). Some
local environmental group members have given me grief for that... sometimes
I just can't win. As for the deer - they would simply move out of the way
when I'd pull in the driveway and casually continue to munch on my
landscape. Sume human urine in a hand sprayer misted on their "favorite"
shrubs seems to have worked.

Louise, that is the reason that I am suggesting a have a heart trap. My
mother in law is practically your neighbor over there in KY. A few miles up
the OHIO and a more friendly habitat for the little fellows, near the water
and a friendlier habitat.
Both will be happier.
