What I have discovered (the expensive and painful way) about
Pieris japonica is they must be protected from harsh, drying
winds. I finally appear to have had one survive 2 winters here.
The only difference is I put up a burlap barrier about a foot
from the shrub as a buffer on the northeast side (my brutal
prevailing winter winds). Admittedly, this winter was
extraordinarily mild but last winter was not. The other thing
I've done the past couple winters is sprayed it with Wilt-Pruf.
It had appeared to me upon conducting an autopsy of the last one
that died it had been dried out. That seems to have made a
difference.
