Charles, I'm hoping some folks on our robin will have answers to your
questions. I know we have primrose experts! I love the balloon flower,
too...I have them among the hostas as a companion plant. This plant adds a
touch of "magic", I think.
Yes, plant costs certainly do add up in a hurry! I know many sources for
beautiful daylilies for $5 and under! Older varieties, yet perform just as
well and just as lovely as the newest ones. JOAN SENIOR (Durio '77) is just
about the whitest white you can find, and a double fan is in this price
range. This one is the most dependable bloomers I have....with large 6"
blooms.
I hope you will learn the ins and outs of growing plants from seed here.
You didn't mention where you live...USDA zone? Are you sowing your seeds
outdoors, or inside? There are many facets to this perplexing, yet
rewarding, hobby! Some seeds require stratification (cold treatment) to
germinate, some don't. Sometimes the seeds may not germinate for a variety
of reasons. Daylily seeds are usually easily germinated, but it's best to
squeeze them to check for firmness (the soft ones are not viable). And it's
a good idea to soak them for 24 hours in a solution of Clorox (or any
household bleach) and water at 1 ounce bleach per gallon of water. This
may prevent rotting or other problems. Sterile containers and soil will
help a lot, too!
Hope you find solutions soon!
If you have any more questions just ask.
