From a page in the Winterrowd-Eck account of North Hill Garden (Vermont)
crocus are saved by planting in the black nursery containers sunk into the
garden. As I recall they plant a group of crocus in the pots, leave the rim
above the ground and mulch all with pine needles or some cover with a natural
look.
It is asserted that the crocus will last many years in these sunken pots and
be free of rodent attacks.
An added thought that is my own - annuals or later emerging perennial would
cover all evidence of pots. Everyone has too many of these in the shed so the
only cost would be to the gardener in digging some holes.
