[SHADEGARDENS] Internet Message

Here, on the very Western edge of Davenport, Iowa, we have lots of
wrens (we just bought 5 more new little Amish made houses at Symphony
In Bloom last night) and have had lots of toads for many years. So
far we have not had a problem with slugs. Now, I understand the toads
dining on the slugs (since we buy new plants all the time, I KNOW we
have to be bringing the beasts in).

What I am curious about is: The Slugs seem to be nocturnal, but are
the Wrens? To be affective, the Wrens would have to be night feeders,
unless the Slugs do their dirty deeds during the day? Anyone have an
opinion on this? We've had Hostas since 1987 so I should think that
we would have a slug damage problem if they were not a natural food
source for some other critter. We have found slugs on newly purchased
plants and have worried a lot about the possibility of hundreds of
eggs. So far, so good!

We feed the birds and have neighbors that also feed. Since we have
oaks and bird feeders, we also get squirrels. I like to look at them
but they are pesky little rascals and do a number on some bulbs!
