<<<That shrub sounds like a nice one for our cold areas, but I wonder if it
could
cause problems, being it's a Buckthorn. In MN we have such a big problem
with
Buckthorns, especially Common Buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica) which was
labelled a SEVERE threat in 1991, and even the local nurseries have agreed to
stop selling Columnar Buckthorn. One of the fact sheets put out by the MN
Dept of Ag. says that even Alder or Fen Buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula)
endangers
our native woodlands, wetlands and savannas because they are invasive and
tend
to grow in large colonies, displacing native plant communities in a
relatively
short time.>>>
Cindy,
I don't know the answer to this. I have never read any warnings for
buckthorn. I know buckthorn is the common 'Tallhedge' and as such is planted
around here. Recently I read that euonymous alatus or the burning bush was a
pest in the NYS. I have a very large and beautiful burning bush and while it
produces a seedling now and then I had no idea it was a problem plant.
That would not stop me from planting a burning bush. You could, I suppose,
inquire if the rhamnus asplenifolia fruits in your area. I can tell you it is
not a bargain plant as is 'Tallhedge' . Maybe someone yet will write with
experience with this plant.
The appearance is lacey and ferny. The two I saw were pruned to a graceful
shape allowing them to used in a border.
