Hippeastrum is the genus of the bulbous plants that are sold around
Christmas time in the US as "amaryllis". There is actually only a single
member of the genus Amaryllis: A. belladonna, the belladonna lily. Most of
the British gardeners I know call the Christmas bulbs "Hippeastrum", and I
suspect the same would be true of Australians.
