Hello, Esther. Privet is the typical 'hedge' you see everywhere; I think
the genus name is Ligustrum, but don't quote me. If you prune them
severely while they are establishing themselves, soon you have the dense
hedge. The sweet peas have a heavy root system, therefore only so many can
live in a patch, as they compete with each other for nutrients. So the
patch is never so dense as to completely prevent light from reaching the
leaves of the privet (which can deal with shade, anyway). My patch is in
an area where it receives sun only in mid-morning and for another about two
hours in the afternoon. The privet will not be densely branched, but
rather spindly, which makes it a perfect support for the peas. There are
different species of privet, but at least some are hardy to zone 3; I
remember that from when I bought mine.
